Shuysky Tribute

Shuysky's tribute – homage of the deposed Tsar of Russia Vasyl IV Shuysky and his brothers Dmitri (Commander of the Russian-Swedish at the Battle of Klushino) and Ivan done before the Polish King Sigismund III Vasa and prince Ladislaus (the then tsar of Russia) on October 29, 1611 in the Senate Hall of the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
Hetman of the Crown Stanisław Żółkiewski held a triumphal entry by the Kraków suburb of the Royal Palace, leading with him the prisoners: the Russian tsar Wasyl IV Szujski, his brothers: Dimitri Szujski with his wife - Grand Duchess Ekaterina Grigoryevna, daughter Grigory Malyuta Skuratov and Ivan Shuysky Mikhail Shein, and Filaret , the non-canonical Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia .
== Background ==
The internal and external policies pursued by Ivan the Terrible led to a crisis in Russian tsardom. Moreover the imminent death of his successors ended the Rurik dynasty. Sigismund III Vasa saw this as an opportunity for the conclusion of a personal union with Moscow, and by strengthening their forces a way to the Swedish crown. The actions of the king were supported by Pope Clement VIII, who was counting on increasing his influence over the Russian Orthodox Church. When the negotiations have been unsuccessful, in 1604. The Poles invaded Russia and took Moscow, introducing the alleged heir, False Dmitri, to the throne.
In 1606 in Moscow anti-Polish uprising broke out, headed by Vasyl Szujski. After killing loyal to the Poles Dmitri Shuisky he was elected tsar, and in 1608 signed a truce with the Polish king. Fearing, however, successive military interventions, and without the full support of subjects, he concluded a pact of alliance with Sweden. This event nobility treated as breaking the truce and saw him as a pretext for the next trip to Moscow.
A year later, on October 29, 1611, hetman Żółkiewski in a solemn procession marched with his army to Warsaw carrying Vasil Shuysky and his brothers Dmitri and Ivan with him. In the presence of the nobility and the senate they made an oath of allegiance to King Sigismund III Vasa.
